The Tri-Cities (composed of Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) are located in the southeastern part of the State of Washington at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers. The Tri-Cities comprise a gateway to a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including outrigger canoeing! The Cascade Mountains to the west and the Blue Mountains to the east contribute to our area's temperate climate with nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, making paddling year round possible. The TCOCC’s goal is to perpetuate the `ohana spirit dedicated through the sport of outrigger canoe racing. Our motto is ONE: “One Heart, One Mind, One Goal”.

History

Gus Aljure and Dave Mears chartered and incorporated the Tri-Cities Outrigger Canoe Club in 1998, after picking up the sport in the early 90's when they lived and worked on the tiny Johnston Atoll, hundreds of miles off the coast of Hawaii. Gus started an outrigger canoe team while on Johnston Island, training year round for the Moloka'i Race. They were both eventually transferred to the Tri-Cities area to work at the Umatilla Depot site, and were naturally drawn by the Columbia River to start another outrigger team.

Present

The club has over 35 members and three canoes, and spends summers traveling throughout the Northwest to competitive racing events such as the Seattle Grind and the Gorge Games. Many members also are involved in learning traditional Hawaiian Hula and Tahitian dancing, which allows us to hold a summer luau fundraiser, as well as learn more about the ancient customs of those who established the sport we love so much today.

Future

As the popularity to learn the art of paddling the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe grows, the Tri-Cities Outrigger Canoe Club will continue to perpetuate the sport of outrigger canoe racing in the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.
